Private Sector Takes Lead as Uganda Prepares for Maiden Climate Finance Forum
The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MoFPED) is set to launch Uganda’s first-ever National Private Sector Engagement Forum on Climate Finance (NaPSEF1), under the theme “Advancing Private Sector Leadership in Climate Finance Mobilisation.” The ground-breaking event will take place on July 10, at Kampala Serena Hotel.
The forum aims to, among others, rally private sector participation in mobilizing climate finance to help Uganda meet its climate targets, which require over USD 28.1 billion by 2030. With 85% of the funds expected from international sources, the government is turning to the private sector as a key partner in bridging the gap.
Currently, private sector contribution to climate finance in Uganda stands at just 12%, far below regional averages. The forum seeks to tackle barriers such as limited access to finance, lack of tailored investment tools, and information gaps.
On behalf of the private sector, Humphrey Nzei, the Board Chairman of the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), is set to deliver a keynote address, reaffirming the sector’s commitment to leading climate finance efforts.
The event brings together stakeholders including banks, investors, cooperatives, NGOs, start-ups, and development partners, to explore investment opportunities in areas such as carbon markets, green bonds, and climate-smart infrastructure.
The forum is part of the implementation of the National Private Sector Engagement Framework (NaPSEF) and will be held regularly to foster public-private collaboration on climate action.
